Editing

At Bonsall Communications, we are sticklers for good grammar. Our flair for turning confusing, wordy prose into crisp, clear copy—without sacrificing the original meaning—has won us the loyalty of our clients.

Stephanie Small manages all our editing projects. She is a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada. Stephanie ensures that every editing project adheres to our strict editing methodology.

Editing methodology

We offer a variety of editing services. We can work with you and edit multiple drafts of the same document and then proofread material before publication. Or, if you’re under a tight deadline, we can quickly copy edit your document to make sure your message is clear and free of any embarrassing errors.

Our editing services are broken into four levels. Depending on your project, all four levels may not be needed.

1. Review

Initially, we prepare a document for editing by checking it against the original outline and ensuring it fits the proposed word and page count. If the document deviates significantly from the outline and word count, we contact the author to discuss what broad steps are needed at the substantive editing stage.

2. Substantive editing

If required, we make structural changes to the document at this stage. Substantive editing also involves rewriting, inserting headings, fact checking and other research, and negotiating changes with the author.

3. Copy editing

At this stage we edit for grammar, punctuation, spelling and jargon. We check tables, graphs and images. Some rewriting may still be required.

4. Proofreading

Only minimal changes are expected at this stage. Special attention is paid to names, numbers, headings, subheads and pagination.
